Dear
Loved Ones,
It’s that magical time of the year again—when we get real,
tangible mail from people we actually like, and when we actively encourage our
children to sit on some stranger’s lap. Naturally, it’s time for a 2013 recap
of the Fairbanks’ misadventures.
The highlight of our year was, of course, the birth of Andy, or
as AJ will gladly tell you, "Andrew Collier Fairbank." He is a
spectacular sleeper, very quiet and amiable with a raspy little voice. And he
stolidly takes more abuse than he deserves from his enthusiastically
affectionate older brother. But when he gets mad, look out---he goes from zero
to sixty in about 2.8 seconds, screaming bloody murder until you give him
something to suck on. Like a blanket. Or a lemon.
AJ loves having a baby brother in the house. He's so sweet with
Andy, even singing to him when he cries at night (yes, they share a bedroom,
and it's wonderful). Reading is his passion. He regularly goes through his
entire (formidable) library of books, along with a weekly handful from
the public library. He's learning a lot. For example:
"Don't take toys from other kids," "Don't poop in the bed,"
and "Don't push on Andy's soft spot." AJ asked Santa for an airplane
this year. He probably isn’t getting a real one.
Emily is making big steps with CuppieCakes now that she isn't
pregnant anymore. She has a website and she's done a couple of successful expo
events. Proceeds from her miracle cakes still go to her mom's MS fund. Emily
also managed to get the whole family to Disney World last January for a week of
delirious fun. And she runs a household with twice as many kids as before and
makes it look easy.
We spent the last summer in Boise again, where I worked for the
United States Attorney's Office prosecuting criminals in federal court. We had
a blast, but it's anyone’s guess where we'll be after graduation this May. I
have an offer or two, but I'm still doing interviews. You'll have to tune in
next year to find out where we end up! I managed to snag a part-time job at a
small law firm in town, which takes up a goodly chunk of my schedule. I spend
the rest of my spare time teaching AJ bad habits and making impolite noises on
Andy’s tummy.
There isn't much time this year between Thanksgiving and
Christmas, but we're doing our best not to rush. Our holiday traditions are
important to us, but none as important as celebrating the birth of the Savior
and His message and mission. May we all remain focused on Him this year.
Love,
The Fairbanks
